There are many types of thyroid diseases out there. It is actually a very broad topic. In this article though, we would only be focusing on the top 3 and on thyroid disease symptoms. But before we dive into those, let us first look into the organ that is causing all this bother, the thyroid.

The Organ Responsible for Thyroid Symptoms

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped secretory organ found on your neck. It wraps itself around your trachea and is located just below your larynx. This gland secretes two hormones: triiodothyronine or T3 and thyroxine or T4. Of the two, T3 is the more potent, even though it only makes up 0.1% of the thyroid hormones. The regulation of these hormones is controlled by the brain, specifically, the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. If something goes wrong with any of the two, may it be an increase or a decrease in the stimulation of the thyroid; it would result to a thyroid disease.

Types of Thyroid Disease and Thyroid Disease Symptoms

So basically, there are 6 types of thyroid diseases. But as mentioned earlier, we would only be discussing the top three. Listed below would be some of the most common thyroid diseases together with thyroid disease symptoms.

1. Hypothyroidism – this happens when the thyroid gland is too sluggish and produces thyroid hormones below the normal level. This could be caused by a variety of factors:

  • Birth defects
  • Surgical Removal
  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
  • Iodine deficiency resulting from poor diet
  • Brain trauma

Those mentioned above could be factors that could lead to a malfunction in one of the stimulating organs for thyroid production. Thyroid symptoms that could be observed in a person suffering from hypothyroidism (See:hypothyroidism symptoms) would be the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Sensitivity to cold weather

2. Hyperthyroidism – this is the exact opposite of hypothyroidism. Therefore, if hypothyroidism is the low production of thyroid hormones, hyperthyroidism is the over production of thyroid hormones.  This could be caused by the following reasons:

  • Thyroiditis or enlargement of the thyroid
  • Grave’s disease
  • Abnormalities in pituitary gland secretion
  • Diet high in iodine
  • Unmonitored intake of thyroid medication

People at risk for having hyperthyroidism are those that are fond of eating shellfish as these are very rich in iodine. Amiodarone, a cardiac drug, has been known to contain high amounts of iodine. Taking large doses of this medication could also predispose patients to having hyperthyroidism. Thyroid disease symptoms to watch out for in hyperthyroidism would include:

  • Tremors
  • Exopthalmia or abnormal bulging of the eyes
  • Palpitations
  • Excessive sweating due to heat intolerance
  • Hyperactive bowels

3. Thyroid cancer – there are 3 types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary and anaplastic. Most of the time, when a person is already suffering from a certain thyroid disease, the risk of getting cancer is increased. However, that is not always the case.   • Family history
  • Age (40 years old and above)
  • Gender (female)
  • Race (Caucasian)
  • Diet (low in iodine)

Helping Treat Thyroid Disease Symptoms

People suffering from thyroid disease deserve our utmost support. We should not only rely on pharmacological treatment in order to get better. We should also do our part at home. Here are some ways on which you could help keep thyroid disease symptoms at bay.

  1. Promote a healthy mind. It would not do for the patient to stress in the littlest of things. Keep him calm and quiet by providing a serene and stress-free environment.
  2. Exercise. Thyroid disease is not something that is very debilitating, unless you are already in the late stages. Exercise would keep your body healthy and you mind alert.
  3. Healthy diet. Now you know which kind of thyroid disease you have, you should tailor your diet to meet your needs. If you have hypothyroidism, you should increase the iodine in your diet and vice versa.
  4. Yoga. There have been studies that showed that yoga might be highly beneficial to patients with thyroid conditions. There are poses that stimulate and relax the thyroid, as well as giving you a peace of mind.
  5. Incorporating soy in the diet could be highly beneficial to a person. It is considered as one of the best “health food” and could only bring with it positive results.

Suffering from thyroid symptoms should not deter you from doing all the things that you love. That is why educating yourself is very important. It is through proper knowledge that you clear up all the myths surrounding the disease and make way for a healthier and more active life.
